Our mission and ethos
“Adagatiya”is the Cherokee Indian word for “guardian”. We at Adagatiya understand ourselves as the guardians of our land, as the keepers of its flora and fauna, not as mere owners or occupants. By living in symbiosis with our natural surroundings as much as possible, we not only reduce our ecological impact regionally, but globally. Our aim is to live with the smallest footprint possible, using re-growing, recycled materials for building and renewable energy to sustain us. Our farm is completely off grid, meaning that we are independent from mains water and electricity created by fossil-fuels. Furthermore, we are not poisoning drinking water with human faeces and our overall target is to transform our site into an all year green “paradise”, and hence to counteract the ongoing desertification of Portugal.
We believe that the world has to change so that our children will have a safe future and we want to play an active role in that change by going as much self-sustainable as possible. We don’t believe that governments, organizations or someone else in general will save us. Furthermore, we don’t agree that big corporations and the resulting consumerism exists to make our life easier, but they are all part of a huge global problem, and now it’s time for individual human beings to wake up and make a change themselves. Naturally, a community or simply a group of people can achieve this goal much more efficiently. Either you make a change, or no change will ever come, or as Ghandi said:
“Be the change, you want to see in the world.”
